NMP @ ICA Boston

In May 2011, I was part of a panel @ ICA Boston. The panel was called FEMINIST PROCESS AND DIGITAL MEDIA ART: STRATEGIES FROM THE ARTISTS, DESIGNERS, PRODUCERS, RESEARCHERS, AND RADICALS and was an exchange with Radhika Gajjala, Paula Gardener, Kim Sawchuk, Carol Stabile, Jacqueline Wallace, and Andrea Zeffiro. Of particular interest for me was the discussion around online publishing, which Jacqueline Wallace (Veer cofounder!) and I will continue with Carol Stabile in Oregon this October.

We're talking about publication strategies that allow for open access, as well as rigorous, experimental, feminist media production. NMP is a great example of the kind of thing possible, with little income. NMP is run entirely voluntarily, and publishes 1 journal every 2 months and has done since 2009. Issues are booked up 6 months to a year in advance. The journal also come out in print, available through POD.

NMP is evidence of web culture at its best -- what you can do with no money if you invest in the collaborative potential of the web.
